25/08/2020 - NEW CLUBHOUSE UPDATE
We have been informed that our submission (put on hold due to Covid-19) to the RLWC2021 legacy project will be presented to the board this week.
We have everything crossed that the huge amount of work put into the bid will have a positive outcome and we will progress to the final stages. We have already prepared a lot of the work required for the final stages so are in a really strong position if it’s the news we want to hear.
The biggest task of all will be generating income both internally and externally so that we can provide first class facilities and double the size of our clubhouse with some exciting new features and fittings for generations to come.
As you can imagine this is a monumental task. We are all trying to come up with ways to raise the required funds. We also recognise this is a really difficult time for members with so much uncertainty.
Alongside the lotto game, Head of Fundraising, Paul Collingwood and his team, have devised a new competition for those who follow both rugby league and football and have a chance to win a big cash prize. We would be eternally gratefully if you are able to get involved, join in the game, share the next post (with all details) and get 100 players involved.
As soon as we hear back from RLWC2021, I shall keep you all updated. Please see the next post.

The sun is shining and it’s the start of a new week. So here are a few thoughts from our vice-chair Mr Billy Vaughan
The question is "how do you measure success”?
Is success measured by how many games you win?
By how many trophies you've won?
How many kids get scholarships?
How many kids become professionals in the game?
Or do you measure success by the smiles on kids’ faces or by the sound of their laughter?
Through the happiness that's generated by the safe haven that our club provides?
I think we all know the answer to the question.

Today the club have updated our risk assessment for our own return to play confidence in alignment with RFL and Government guidelines.
We know it’s not the most exciting thing to read but it is vitality important to have in place and regularly review to ensure your safety
18/08/2020 - NEW INFORMATION SHARING VIA EMAILS
The club are trailing a new information and update sharing method which will be via email.
Club coaches have been asked to collate up to date email addresses for all their parents/guardians. Please ensure they have your details if you wish to receive our updates.
This will not replace whattsapp/Facebook groups that coaches are administrators for but will provide regular updates of all the ‘behind the scenes’ activities that are ongoing and take some pressure off our coaches.

14/08/2020 - PORTICO LEADING THE WAY
Chairman Mark Hobin (Hobes) shares details of another club first which demonstrates once again, Portico Vine really are leading the way.
Hobes stated, “This has been a monumental, long term project that we have been working on behind the scenes but I am absolutely delighted with the finished product. Our key volunteers have been fully supportive and understand the need for such a piece of work to have been conducted despite it impacting on additional responsibilities and their time.”
Presented to the senior committee and sub committee yesterday, this in-depth health, safety and hygiene document will prioritise the welfare and safety of all our members and visitors for years to come. The document will record all details of the day-to-day running of the club.

11/08/2020 - PORTICO'S LARGER GROUP SIZE COVID SECURE GUIDE
So here it is.....Portico Vine ARLFC’s Covid-secure guide for larger group training following yesterday’s guidance update. It sits alongside a much larger document but this condensed version provides you will all you need to know.
It is a ‘living’ document so is version controlled and will be updated accordingly.
A PDF version of the below screenshots will be circulated internally via all the team coaches so parents/guardians and players know their responsibilities.
09/08/2020 - SUBSCRIPTION FEES
On the 1st April 2020, the senior committee met in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and unanimously decided to suspend subscription fees for all of our players/members.
The club have been overwhelmed by your support in keeping the club afloat by making voluntary monthly subscription payments, partaking in the Portico Vine Bingo Lotto and with other kind donations.
The club would also like to place on record our immense thanks to Sport England for the emergency funding we received to help pay for rent, bills and the Covid-19 mitigation measures we have implemented. Who knows where we would be without such fantastic internal and external support?
As the phased return to rugby league continues, we have been delighted to welcome our members slowly and safely back to their second home at Scholes Lane with the ‘non contact outdoor activities’.
As we continue to recover and rebuild, the club would be very grateful if subscription fees can be reactivated from 1st September 2020 with our preferred collection being via online banking. Please will you make relevant arrangements with your banks?

07/08/2020 - KEEPING YOU INFORMED - COVID 19
Following the latest update from the RFL in relation to the phased Community Rugby League Return to Play Action Plan (posted earlier today), the club will shortly be releasing a NEW user friendly Covid-19 mitigation document. This will be disseminated throughout the club and community reflecting the most recent changes of the ever evolving pandemic.
This will be an easy to follow summary of the contents of our second document, a brand new 70 page Covid-19 Health, Safety and Hygiene Policy of which the Senior Committee have been working tirelessly on over the last few weeks.
A brief snapshot of the shorter version is below as we just require a final proof read of both documents by our chairman before formal release to all coaches, players, parents/guardians, sponsors and supporters.
At the same time, the club would like to pass on a huge amount of thanks to volunteer
who, with her extensive clinical qualifications and experience, has offered to be our single point of contact for any Covid-19 developments from the RFL.
We have numerous projects on the go at the club at the moment of which we intend to share in a short video over the next few weeks so watch this space.

05/07/2020 - WE HAVE THE GREATEST VOLUNTEERS - MARK HOBIN
I’ve said it before but I will say it many more times to come.......we are blessed with the greatest volunteers and most selfless people I have had the honour and pleasure to meet. It is why I signed on the dotted line. It is why we do what we do.
These pictures won’t do justice to the work that is currently on going behind the scenes by members of your committee. I can’t find enough superlatives to describe each and everyone of them but over the last 12 weeks, I would like you to know, along with your support and that of the coaches, child welfare team, our social media outlets and the sub committee, Sean Furlong, Ian Skerry Snr and Susan Skerry in particular have kept the club afloat and moving forward.

30/06/2020 - PORTICO RECOGNIZED BY RFL
We were formally recognized by the RFL on their latest webinar for leading the way nationally as a community club in response to the challenges presented by Covid-19 and our compliance and mitigation strategy in returning to non contact outdoor training. This is a huge honour and achievement.
We have since been inundated with requests to share our best practice with clubs throughout the country. This has extended to amateur football, hockey, cricket and netball clubs.
Whilst we are more than willing to do so for the benefit of communities up and down the country, with success and recognition comes the spotlight. We have already experienced malicious allegations as previously statemented.
Let’s continue our outstanding efforts and set the standards for others to follow. Our ethos is simply OneTeamOneDream. Let’s not give anybody the opportunity to dent the green and gold rocket ship destined to the moon. Follow the guidance as coach, player, spectator or supporter and challenge those who don’t.

12/06/2020 - PORTICO RECOGNIZED BY MERSEYSIDE POLICE
This afternoon, the club were contacted by the Rugby Football League who had received a complaint from an individual(s) that our club have begun some ‘non contact outdoor training’ against regulations.
We would like to sincerely thank this individual(s) for their time and effort in making the report.
Having providing the RFL with a verbal update of all the mitigation we have put in place in line with Government guidelines, key legislation and the policies from our governing bodies, they requested all of our resources as they wish them to be shared Nationally as best practice. This will significantly raise the profile of our club.
So from the Covid-19 video we have created, to the deep cleanse of the clubhouse, the investment and installation of numerous hand sanitisers and signage through to our new hygiene policy. Via regular updates and reviews, we have implemented a strategy that goes above and beyond the guidelines as we stay alert to control the virus and thus save lives.
We will continue to support our families throughout and will welcome them back with open arms BUT only when they are ready. It was absolutely superb for some of our children to be back at Scholes Lane with their teammates this week despite the control measures we have implemented. Nobody can take that smile off the children’s face when it’s so important to their physical and mental health.
So once again, on behalf of all committee members, a huge thanks to our mystery person(s) but your allegations have proved to be unfounded and malicious but helped raise the profile of our wonderful club.
***Update 13th June - The Projects and Partnerships Manager at RFL, the Director of Partnership and Development at RFL and the chair of NWC primary age groups have all been in touch with the committee to state how impressed they are with the lengths the club have gone to with such informative and regular correspondence and innovation during these unprecedented times.

09/05/2020 - BUSY DOING NOTHING - BILLY VAUGHAN
Dear all this is Billy Vaughan, your Vice Chairman and I will open up this time with an apology to those who have been busy doing nothing. But if I'm unaware of it, it won't be included in this article so please let us know what your doing.
We set a challenge to the kids at all age groups to come up with a new training top. The criteria was fully explained to all entrants. Andy Connor, Sean Furlong and myself narrowed all the entries down to the last four and we agreed the overall winner was Jack Rotherham from the u15s.
Jack's winning design has been sent to our manufacturer at Future Sports and will be available to purchase very shortly with a persentage of the profits going to the NHS.

So here it is!! The winner!! Huge Congratulations to Jack Rotherham from our U15s team for his design which encapsulates club colours, the symbolic NHS Rainbow and references the town we play out of.
The bespoke design will now be sent to suppliers for them to bring it to life for our supporters to get their hands on one.

01/05/2020 - PROJECT CLUBHOUSE UPDATE
To keep you all informed.....
We have submitted an initial application to the CreatedBy Rugby League World Cup 2021 (RLWC2021) Team outlining our plans to upgrade and extend our current clubhouse facilities.
The format of the RLWC20201 is in two stages. We have completed stage one and have been notified that we are being recommended for stage two progression which is brilliant news. The scheme is a matched funding process. We have a projected cost for completion of £500,000, therefore as a club, are required to find funding for £250,000.
The project steering committee currently have submitted four capital bids to different organisations and they are in varying levels of progression. We have held positive discussions with Merseyside Police and Sport England who have been hugely supportive so far.

09/04/2020 - PORTICO IN THE COMMUNITY INCLUDING SOUPER LEAGUE
Hopefully our recently introduced mottos and ethos of ‘OneTeamOneDream’ and ‘Working with the Community, For the Community’ are now etched into your minds.
Even under these horrendous circumstances we all find ourselves, the club have managed to coordinate and organise (in line with Government guidelines) the delivery of:
4000 (yes, you read that right) tins/packets of Soup to local hospices and homeless charities Hope Centre in St Helens. Huge thanks to Tesco Extra Heinz UK and Crosse & Blackwell for your wonderful support. It’s been hugely rewarding working alongside Saints Community Development Foundation throughout.
01/04/2020 - CLUB SUBSCRIPTION UPDATED STATEMENT
Following on from recent correspondence in relation to subscription fees during the early stages of the Coronavirus outbreak, the Chairman, Vice-Chair, Child Welfare Officer, Secretary and Treasurer have reviewed and updated our strategy today.
At the heart of our club are our people and without them we have no club. The heart of our club reaches out to the community. So without our people we have no community.
Therefore, with immediate effect, the club are suspending mandatory subscription fees. We hope this will ease a small amount of worry during these uncertain and ever unpredictable times
16/03/2020 - NWC AND PORTICO CORONAVIRUS STATEMENT
The Senior Committee have been constantly monitoring the coronavirus situation for the last month. The welfare and safe being of all our children volunteers & their families has always been our greatest concern.
Now that the situation has been taken out of our hands, we refer everyone to the statement and guidance from the RFL & NWC (below).
The club will cease all matches, training, fundraising activities and face to face meetings with i
immediate effect until 18th April 2020. We will keep you regularly updated with developments and notify you if that date is to be extended.
16/03/2020 -CLUB SUBSCRIPTION UPDATE AND OUR PLAYERS
Members of the Senior Committee held an urgent teleconference this evening to discuss the financial implications to both the club and our contributors following the decision to suspend all forms of rugby league this evening.
The current state of play is that we must cover our fixed costs such as ground rent, insurance and utility bills. Our annual festival (which forms the largest part of our incomings) is now in doubt.
We have discussed several options and contingencies based on individual/family financial commitments versus the clubs ability to continue to function with or without them.
02/02/2020 - PANTHERS U13S WIN THE JOHN HERBERT MEMERIAL TROPHY
Portico Vine Panthers Under 13's won the first John Herbert Cup match over Thatto Heath Crusaders thanks to a Hat-trick from Kurt Latimer award winner Reece Ellison and a Try from Dominic Windever to seal a brilliant win!
27/01/2020 - PORTICO VINE STICKER BOOK COMING SOON!
The club have agreed a deal with Club Legends for them to design us a bespoke Portico Vine sticker album. They will come down to the club and photograph, every player, coach and volunteer, turn us into sticker format and then package them for sale in packs of 6. They will provide us with the uniquely designed album for the kids to purchase and collect the stickers and fill their albums.
We hope this will provide the kids with a lifetime memory of the time they played for Portico Vine. All child welfare provisions are in place.
They will be down at the club on Wednesday 11th March from 4pm. Hobes will co-ordinate the staggered times of each age group (youngest to oldest) but please can you ensure we have as close to 100% turn out. There will be one further date available for a mop up should we require it. Please can you pencil the date
24/01/2020 - PORTICO VINE FUN RUN
On Sunday we will introduce another permanent fixture for our club with an inaugural fun run.
Chairman, Mark Hobin has decided to combine pre-season training with an opportunity for the whole Portico family to get together and have a laugh. He explains....
“The idea is primarily to get all age groups and their families together in one place before the season starts. Spend time meeting new people, saying hello to somebody you don’t know and sharing a laugh and a joke. The fun run will combine rugby related activities with getting fitter and healthier. It is open to members young and old so I expect a big turn out from our teams and their supporters.
18/10/2019 - SCHOLES LANE FUTURE SECURED
This evening we have received official documentation from St Helens council with a Head of Terms lease for Scholes Lane Playing Fields.
The lease replaces the current rolling agreement and secures the future of our current crop of players and the next generation of Panthers too as it’s for 25 years!!!!!

22/09/2019 - KATE BURROWS JUMPS ALL FOR SKEGNESS 2020
A huge shout out to our very own Kate Burrows who yesterday jumped out of a plane to raise funds for our U8s section tour to Skegness next year. The selfless act saw her raise a whopping £800 for the lucky children. Here’s Kates version of events......
“Friday night I was panicking, I knew it was safe but that didn't stop me from worrying about breaking a leg or popping an ear. Finally, I got about 3 hours sleep and we hit the road at 7am. I was completely fine until we got to the road before the airfield and then my nerves kicked in. I really didn't want to do it!

06/07/2019 - SEFTON PARK TRANSFORD INTO GREEN AND GOLD FOR 5K MUD RUN
This morning Sefton Park was transformed into a sea of green and gold, Portico Vine filled up the Liverpool skyline and it was a sight to behold.
Coaches, players and parents represented our under 12s, 10s and 8s,They headed to the start line with their families and stood with their teammates. The countdown was complete and so started the 5k mud run.Under and over obstacles, the smiles displaying the sheer amount of fun.Whilst the players eased through their latest task, Many of the grown ups cried out for an oxygen mask.

On Friday our U7s and Cubs where lucky enough to be mascots for the Saints players, while some even got a run out on the pitch at half time!

12/06/2019 - STATEMENT FROM OUR NEW CHAIRMAN MARK HOBIN
From the moment I walked into Portico Vine, the overwhelming sense of a community togetherness gripped me and has never let go since.
This club has some of the most genuine, committed and passionate people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Our wonderful coaches, parents, players and volunteers are the heartbeat of our existence.
My personal challenge is to keep the momentum going from my predecessors who have built the club into what it is today. My ethos will be “stronger together”. That means on and off the pitch. All age groups, across all pitches.
Our collective challenge is to continue providing children with a safe, secure and supportive environment to enjoy rugby league. Families have already become lifelong friends, and friends have become Portico families.

PORTICO VINE ARLFC RECEIVE £3,600 FROM THE CREATEDBY RLWC2021 CAPITAL GRANTS LEGACY PROGRAMME
The grant, which has been awarded to benefit the growth of rugby league at grassroots level in St Helens, will fund Portico’s new equipment.
Portico Vine ARLFC is set to receive £3,600 from the CreatedBy RLWC2021 Capital Grants Programme. Delivered in partnership between RLWC2021, the sport’s national governing body, the Rugby Football League, Sport England and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, the CreatedBy programme is a funding pot of up to £10million made available by the government to support the legacy of the Rugby League World Cup by growing participation in the sport.
10/04/2019 - MARK HOBIN RUNNING 2020 MARATHON FOR PORTICO
Three years ago, with my support crew in place, I lined up at the start line in Manchester. Months of training throughout the winter months was all in preparation for this day. The sacrifices my family had made to support me through the rigorous training regime was at the forefront of my mind. I also thought of the Police Officers who had sacrificed themselves in the line of duty. I would be running for them and the charity that look after their families....Care of Police Survivors.
It was a warm day, the Manchester crowds had come out in their thousands and I felt ready to take on the 26 mile course. My soon to be wife and only daughter at the time cheered me off and I was away.
31/02/2019 - PANTHERS MASCOTS FOR SAINTS VS SALFORD
The Panthers once again had the honour of being mascots for the mighty Saints this time is was an away trip the Salford Red Devil at the AJ Bell Stadium , despite it being on a Thursday most of the squad came along as well as some other team members , They all loved it and to make it even better St Helen's put on an empathetic showing with a 26 to 4 win. We are all proud of them all as they was a credit to the club as member of staff from Salford complimented their behaviour and there passion for the game
27/02/2019 - A MESSAGE FROM THE CLUBS NEW ACTING CHAIRPERSON
i would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the Acting Chairperson of Portico Vine ARLFC. I have been volunteering at Portico Vine for 7 years and am looking forward to taking on the new challenge of driving the club forward with the team of volunteers we currently have and new ones as they join the ever growing team down at Portico Vine.My vision for the club is to ensure we are one club all striving for the same outcomes to ensure the children and adults who are members of our club have a valuable and positive experience.

Congratulations to the Man, The Legend, The lifeblood and heartbeat of the Portico Club, our very own BILLY VAUGHAN, on being named the Volunteer of the Year at the St. Helens RFC Community Awards tonight.
There is nothing we can really say about this incredible, inspirational and irreplaceable Gentleman, and the superhuman efforts he puts into our club, that can really do him justice.
Therefore, it only remains for us to say.....
You truly deserve any and all recognition and the praise of your peers across all of the R.L. community and even the professional players in attendance tonight. You are truly one of a kind.

I was scrolling through Facebook when I seen ‘life for a kid’ charity event, rugby league all stars V Methley warriors Masters. With the chance to play alongside legends, Paul sculthorpe, Gareth Ellis, Andrew Lynch, Danny Orr, Paul newlove and raise money for an amazing charity, founded by dean hoggard, I had to apply. Next thing I know I had the charity pack had come through my letter box.

10/11/2018 - GREEN HAIR , YELLOW BEARD, A PROMISE!
As you all may know, I spend a lot of time as a coach/helper with the Portico Panthers Rugby League club here in St. Helens. I mainly help out with the Under 13's team and made them a promise when (or if as it was) we started the season back in February. As we struggled to stay in existence, we managed to recruit enough players to play our games this season but not without struggle.
I promised the boys that when they won their first game, I would dye my hair Green for their Presentation Night on 10th November. The lads didn't disappoint, they worked hard, improved, and got the wins that they richly deserved.

14/10/2018 - PANTHERS U13S WIN AGAINST ACCRINGTON
Well, where do I start? It goes without saying by now how much these lads and their dedication and improvement makes us all extremely proud.
But, sometimes they show something that you haven't seen before, or didn't expect to see, in training or matches.
Today was one of those days!
Trailing 20-4 midway through the 2nd half and playing far from their best, you could be forgiven for expecting the boys to close up the shop and accept the loss? Yes? WRONG!
Today, our lads showed the spirit, desire, heart and sheer 'never say die' attitude that a lot of teams don't have.
14/10/2018 - HARD FAUGHT DRAW FOR PANTHER U7S
A lunchtime kick off allowed the coach a little bit of a lie in after Wigan’s Grand Final victory yesterday but today’s game for the Panthers was much bigger than that one.
The showpiece was at Scholes Lane as the hosts welcomed Oldham St.Annes for the last game of the season. A tough game was expected with the reverse fixture earlier on in the season ending 8-4 to Oldham.
A full strength squad of fifteen Panthers turned out alongside a sell out crowd to see their hero’s in action. Captain for the day was Will who elected to attack first after winning the toss.

16/09/2018 - HARD WORK PAYING OFF FOR THE PANTHER U13S
When we started training for this season, we had just 8 lads and serious doubts over whether we would even start the season. But, we have recruited. We sadly lost some lads along the way, going to Limehurst with just 10 players and suffering a heavy defeat. But, we carried on. We had more lads coming to training and soon we had a squad, enough to play regularly. We suffered heavy defeats week after week. But, we carried on, we worked hard.

16/09/2018 - PANTHERS U7S WELL DESERVED WIN AGAINST LANGWORTHY REDS
Today it was back on home soil for the Panthers, with Langworthy making the journey down the East Lancs Road.
An almost full strength squad were available and despite a wet start to the day, things brightened up from the moment Angela set up her homemade cake stall.
Maybe not the pre-game meal of elite athletes but with chocolate being wiped from the faces, the Panthers began their warm up.
Captain for the day was Diezel who helped the coach with a pre game message of taking all they had practiced in training onto the pitch today

12/08/2018 - PANTHERS IMPRESS AT BANK QUAY FESTIVAL
With holidays effecting numbers, Portico u11’s travelled to Burtonwood’s festival with low than normal numbers, with Matty Nolan and Jack Nolan on debut and Kyle Lewis playing only his second every game the Panthers would be up against two teams that had already beaten them earlier in the season in Burtonwood and Woolston Golds, While Bank Quay had a new look to their side.

01/07/2018 - CLOSE BATTLE AGAINST FOLLY LANE
Second early morning of the weekend for the Panthers following their previous exploits at completing a 5k mud run on the Wirral.
After a good nights sleep, they all made their way to Folly Lane and the second half of the season was upon them. A 0930hrs kick off meant an early commute into Salford.

24/06/2018 - U7S PANTHERS AND ROCHDALE EVEN STEVENS
After our annual festival and Father’s Day taking place over recent weeks, it was back to Group B action for the Panthers on the hottest matchday of the season.
Armed with suntan cream, beach tents and lots of water, another phenomenal show of support gathered on the sidelines as welcomed Rochdale Mayfield to Scholes Lane.
The Panthers handed another debut to a little superstar who has trained well over the last couple of weeks and Isabelle’s infectious smile was there for all to see during the warm up.

A short message to our "Portico Loyal Partners" a massive thank you for your support and participation at our fund raising race night. Portico Vine Rugby League Club are a comnunity club who without doubt could not survive if it were not for the commitment of our loyal partners.
The race night raised a staggering £3,100 towards the upkeep of our club, we have 168 children both girls & boys who will benefit from the money raised.

03/06/2018 - ATTITUDE AND SHEER DETERMINATION
If you read a score line of 72-12 then your first thought is "what a hiding" or "they must be crap"
As a coach, sometimes your heart aches for your boys when you read a scoreline and in NO way does it reflect the effort, attitude and sheer determination.
Today the 13's took on top of the table team and for 30 out of the 50 minutes played they rattled and shook the opposition to their boots. Sadly, when you have no subs, get injuries and suffer from heat exhaustion due to themagnificent shift you have given for your team, then the opposition (with 5 subs) can take advantage and run around you at will as you struggle.
03/06/2018 - EARLY MORNING ON THE MOTORWAY FOR THE PANTHERS
Late night fundraising and early morning onto the motorway headed the young Panthers and their supporters. Oldham St Anne’s today opponents and with half term fun in full swing, the travelling squad was thinner than usual but packed with smiling faces.
Captain for the day was Seth after completing some fundraising of his own running one mile non stop at the Rock and Roll Marathon in Liverpool to raise funds for presentation night.
A big pitch, hot day and just one available interchange meant those on the pitch would have to play for longer than usual, a task they seemed to relish

Where to begin?? The most amazing fundraising night I’ve ever had the pleasure to have been part of.
There is no way I could have managed it on my own so a huge shout out to all the people who helped sell raffle tickets prior to the night!! An even bigger shout out to the generous bunch who collectively bought literally hundreds and hundreds of tickets - I am so grateful (a separate post will follow with details of winners who weren’t at the event).
It would be impossible to name everybody who has contributed to last night but I do want to highlight two people who gave up their own Saturday night to make it possible.

A bright sunny day welcomed the two teams to Scholes Lane perfect conditions for Rugby League
The hosts Portico must have been still asleep when Gladiators burst from the defence and scored from the firs attack. This seemed to wake up the Panthers who replied straight away after some lovely passing from Max and Ryan who passed the ball to Sam who burst into the defence to score the first try of the game for them.
The visitors responded straight away when they powered through the Portico defensive line to touch down on the line.
20/05/2018 - PANTHERS U7S AN NEWTON STORM U7S PUT ON A SHOW!
Following two of the best training sessions this season, the Panthers went into their home game against Newton Storm with a spring in their step. The sunshine was out to oversee a game of junior rugby league worthy of a place in the Magic Weekend line up.
After a team rendition of Happy Birthday, Sam celebrated by leading out the Panthers in front of a record home crowd with Newton supporters making the short journey in their masses to supplement the Panthers biggest fans on the sidelines and latest recruit Nancy joining her big sister Ellie to cheer them on.

Today the Panthers entered the Lions Den. The home of Limehurst. The sun was reflecting off the green and gold training tops as the U7s made their way across to Oldham.
After excellent teamwork and leadership in training this week, Alfie led out the Panthers who were once again supported by a massive away following on the sidelines.
It was a pleasure to introduce Bailey and Dexter to the set up after both signed on for a combined 10 million fee earlier in the week. They were presented with their new kit just before kick off.

22/04/2018 - U7s IMPROVING WEEK BY WEEK
A trip down the East Lancashire Road this weekend saw the U7 Panthers visit Langworthy U7. The players had been working really hard at training in the week particularly in defence.
The team talk was easy....have fun, help each other when tackling and run into the spaces when attacking.
Harrison’s excellent performances this season saw him chosen as the captain for today and after shaking hands with Langworthys coach and captain, we decided to defend first.
22/04/2018 - BACK TO WINNING FOR PANTHERS U11s
Today a smaller than usual squad travelled to our friends at Bury, with expectations high for what is always a well fought out but close game. On this occasion we were not disappointed, as despite the wet conditions both teams treated the parents to another cracking game.
Bury won the toss and elected to kick off the game as the Panthers looked to learn from recent weeks, starting strong from the first minute, with the forwards pushing through the gaps and looking for the off load. However, as defences were on top both teams struggle to take their chances, with Bury missing some excellent chances from an excellent kicking game, While the Panthers just couldn’t hold onto the final pass. Eventually it was Bury who opened the scoring, fining space out wide to dive over,

Excellent game today we saw the panthers take on Blackbrook Blue at there home ground for an 11 am KO.
The Panthers have been training very hard this week on their defence and working as a team.
Hallie is our team captain had a awesome game ,she tackled everything that moved and was awarded best defender.
Lucas had a awesome game and scored 2 tries .

15/04/2018 - ST JUDES U11S TO STRONG FOR PANTHERS
Today our Under 11s welcomed a strong Wigan St Judes team to Scholes Lane for the 1st meeting between the teams in 3 years!
For the Panthers it was a learning curve as Judes belied their group C classification to produce a strong well drilled performance from the kick off!
St Judes kicked off and from the the first few tackles Portico could see that this would be a hard game as the Wigan defence dominated in the tackle! On the fourth tackle they forced the mistake and a few tackles later crossed for the first try!
As the clock ticked on Judes continued to apply a different type of pressure to what the Panthers were use to and eventually the beat the Panthers defence for a few more tries
15/04/2018 - PANTHERS U7S CONTINUE TO PROGRESS
West Bank Bears were today’s opposition for the Panthers. The second home game of the season which saw Kate take the captains armband.
After their warm up and Panthers roar, the two teams took to the pitch. Kate won the toss and elected to defend first.
The Bears scored with their first run of the match and despite some brilliant runs from Harrison, Will, Sam and Kate, the Bears’ strong defence held firm and they scored a further two tries in quick succession.
Jamie, Tobias and Alfie were superb in both attack and defence and all the hard work in training was clear to see for all the supporters cheering on from the sideline.
08/04/2018 - PANTHERS WELCOME WESTHOUGHTON U11S
Following on from Thursday's game, Portico were back in Group C action today as they welcomed West Houghton to Scholes Lane, looking for a repeat of last year's meeting between the two sides, in which their was over 70 points scored! We're that game was about attack this one was defiantly defence orientated with big hits and ball handling being the highlight of a pointless 1st half! The Second half seemed to open up a bit more and after dropping the ball close to the line a number of times, Portico eventually got some luck and some swift handling between the Portico forwards resulted in full back Micky Molynuex diving over close to the sticks! Jay Lacey stepped up & converted! core his first ever match day try.
08/04/2018 - CLOSE BATTLE FOR THE PANTHERS
Early morning start but no rain forecast so the Under 7 Panthers started their journey towards the M60 and into Oldham for their second game together. The opponents this time Waterhead Warriors.
A tremendous away support mustered to see Jayden make his debut and captain the team as a belated birthday present.
The first quarter saw both teams exchange early tries with Kate side stepping four tacklers before crossing the line to open the scoring for Portico. Sam took his tally to three tries in two games and a mesmerising and determined run by Sonny saw him score his first ever match day try.

After the success of last year & the giant leap in improvement in all the boys both individually & as a team, Portico U'11s have been rewarded by being moved up a group! This means we will be playing teams with far more experience and depth. Over the off season we have had a few changes to the Squad & would like to officially welcome Jacob, Arty, Callum, Mac & Ellis to the club , who all bring their own individual attributes to our team!
25/03/2018 - PANTHERS BATTLE HARD DESPITE DEFEAT
The sun was shining, BBQ sizzling and the cakes baking! Time for the first ever league game for our U7 Panthers.
One by one they started to arrive. Filled with excitement, nerves and big smiles. Time to take to the pitch for our first home game of the season. The opponents were Folly Lane in their red and white kits.
Warm up completed, all the supporters in place so the Panthers made their little circle together and gave out a loud shout of “3,2,1...PANTHERS!”
11/03/2018 - U10'S DEFEAT A VERY STRONG HINDLEY
Portico Panthers decided to kick the game off against a rough and ready Hindley team. We restricted their metres and forced them to have to have a massive kick down field to clear their lines. The teams looked fairly evenly matched until Charlie Molyneux scored a great break away try, dodging and weaving past Hindley defenders before going over in the corner. Charlie then missed the conversion, Panthers lead 4-0. games under their belts against harder opposition they have more than matched up to.
05/03/2018 -U9'S GOLD LOOK TO PUSH ON FROM LAST SEASON
So its almost time for the new season to start , an air of excitement is building around the club . The players , the coaches and the parents hard work over the pre season to ensure everything is ready for this moment . Over the pre season the players have been put through their paces with the belief they can push on from the great end to last season , Learning new rules and new positioning was tough but the team have adapted perfectly , with a few pre season games under their belts against harder opposition they have more than matched up to.

Funeral details for Kurt are as follows...
Friday 16th March at 2pm at St.Bartholemews Church, Rainhill,
followed by a service at St. Helens Crematorium at 3.30pm
An after service function will be at the Bird I'th Hand pub in St. Helens afterwards for all to raise a glass in his honour.
The family have asked if persons would wear a small amount of green in honour of Kurt then it would be much appreciated.

It is with a collective broken heart that we have to announce that our dear friend and coach, Kurt Latimer, sadly passed away on March 2nd after a short but brave battle against illness.
Kurt has been an instrumental figure in the growth and success of the Portico club, not least with the Under 15's team which he guided to great success after building up a squad from near scratch. His infectious friendship and love for the club will be sorely missed by all of us.
We hope and pray he will look down on us from the heavens and lead us to a bigger, stronger and bright future just like he wished. Our thoughts and prayers go to his wife Lorraine and his sons, Conor, Ben and Callum at this most saddest of times.

02/03/2018 -U13'S SQUAD STRUGGLES AN UNWELCOME DISTRACTION
The transition from Junior to Youth is never an easy one but for our Under 13’s this has been a particularly tough time in the close season. We had suffered the loss of no less than 7 players due to one thing and another which left us in a precarious position of only having 10 players back for the new season ahead hopefully finish some good rugby league with some tries.

01/03/2018 -TOUGH PRESEASON FOR U10'S
Last season we didn't really have the best of starts as we found it quite hard adapting to the new rules that had been brought in, however we actually finished it really strongly and we are looking to carry that on into the new season. We actually changed our sessions with a couple of games to go. This season we are moving up to 11 a side, introducing kicks (in game and conversions) and scrums so training had to be majorly adapted. We focused mainly on adjusting our style of play. We now know that our forwards are going to get us going forwards, and our backs are going to hopefully finish some good rugby league with some tries.
27/02/2018 - U7's READY FOR THE CHALLENGE
So after weeks of training, the time came for the U7 Greens and Golds to join forces for their first game of full contact rugby.
After a frosty night, the new pitch at Scholes Lane passed an early morning inspection and shortly afterwards, dressed in their new kits, excited players started to arrive.A large group of supporters followed with a real buzz about the place as the players started to warm up.
It was then time for all the boys and girls to put their skills on display for all to see. From great running to some fearless tackling, e and at the end of the game, they all shook hands and completed a lap of honor.

12/02/2018 - CAPTAINS CORNER -WAR CRY
Calling all coaches, players, committee members and parents "please" spread the word.
Recruitment is a problem at many levels for all clubs and its no different here at Portico Vine.
Some teams are overloaded with players and their actually struggling for coaching staff.
Then other age groups are struggling for players and its a never ending challenge that requires constant promotion.
At one point last weekend our U13s due to injuries only had nine players on the pitch. Now that's demoralising for players, coaches & everyone associated with our club.

As yet another new season quickly approaches it feels like we've never stopped.
The truth of the matter is we never have stopped.!
Kieran's having to deal with all the new signings and alter all the fixture changes for all age groups and the season hasn't even started.
Michelle & Sean are frantically arranging training seasons and fitness regimes for the U15s with a development programme built in, and the season hasn't even started. Ant Rotherham & my pal Big Dave O'Dowd are frantically trying to recruit players for our Elliott's section building up numbers and enthusiasm within the local community, and the season hasn't even started.

One of our new under 7s teams plus a few lucky 11s got the chance to walk out with their hero's. While the 11s & 15s did a fantastic job on the Flags with great support from the 100 plus parents & grand parents that came to watch
23/01/2018 - U7's RECIEVE NEW KIT FROM SPECIAL GUEST
What a fabulous first night back at training for the Cubs and U7 Panthers. The boys and girls picked up were they left off following the winter break. We got back into the fun and games with lots of running, passing and scoring of tries. Due to their superb skills levels, the team were then put through their paces with the introduction of running at soft pads to simulate contact. No fear!!! A game of bulldog brought the session to an earlier than usual finish as we had a couple of surprises. Firstly ex Portico and current Wigan Warrior, Liam Forsyth made a guest appearance to present the U7s with their new kit.

As the club won't be running a senior team or 18s this season the Management has decided to look at the younger age groups for this season's Club Captain & Jnr Captain.
After a vote between the oldest teams u15s -Youth and u11's to represent the Primary age groups two players have been selected!
Our club Youth Captain will be Callum Burrows who was outstanding for the 14s last year, always leading from the front and gives 100% every game.ur Junior Club Captain will be Bailey Burrows! Bailey suffered a serious knee injury mid way through last season, but during that time never missed a training session or match as he cheered on the team. He is Mr Portico and was voted in unanimously by his fellow team mates last night! Congratulations to both Players, we the Management committee are positive you will both do the club and its members proud in your new roles

After a busy few weeks in November & December of enjoyable Portico Vine team presentations, Christmas party's and well deserved recognition off & awards to our great young playing members and volunteers.
Doesn't time fly bye very quickly, with the Christmas decorations taken down and put back up in the loft or garage for another year and now rugby training starting back with a vengeance. The phone calls and text messages
have quickly changed from Happy New Year to ' What time does training start tomorrow'. The WhatsApp groups have gone from jokes about Christmas Turkeys to ' Who's our first friendly game against'

2 of our volunteers picked up awards at last night's Community awards evening held at The Totally Wicked Stadium
Our former player Reece Wilks picked up the award for best Saints Foundation volunteer for all his work with St Helens Foundation over the past year!
Later in the evening our Club Secretary Sean Furlong, who has held nearly every position on the committee during his many years at the club was awarded with the 'unsung hero' award for his services to the club and the game!

10/01/2018 - CHANGING OF THE GUARD
Dear Portico Vine (Panthers & Poets) members and volunteers,
With immediate effect our great friend Kurt Latimer will be stepping down as headcoach of our club & coach of our u15s team. Due to Kurts increasing work commitments and busy schedule as an integral key employee of a progressive company. He has had to priorities rightly his busy work commitments and step down from his coaching roles within our club.
Kurt as an important member of our senior committee will still be down the club helping whenever possible and watching/supporting teams when he can.

Last night the club held it's second Presention evening for the those cubs & 8's unable to attend the first along with the whole Under 10s team to celebrate the end to a fantastic season.
After a delay waiting for a Saints player that never turned up we got underway with a busy night!

02/12/2017- U10's RIOT TRAINING WITH MERSEYSIDE POLICE
Today the under 10's had an end of season day out with a difference! Instead of going Bowling or air factory they where given the chance to visit the Merseyside Police training facility & had a blast learning about the role of the police in our community, with some fitness test followed by how to bust doors open for a police raid, a few techqiues to deal with rioting side lines, a ride in a riot van and how to properly detained & handcuff a suspect!
We would like to send a massive thanks to Mark Hobin and his colleagues Merseyside Police for organising a fantastic day out with a difference!
01/12/17 - CAPTAINS CORNER - START OF A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP
Dear All, just a bit of feedback for your goodselves to pass on please, our community meeting with Craig at Saint's went well Michelle & myself attended, there were attendees from Thatto Heath, Haydock, Blackbrook, the referee's association (Phil) Saint's and Martin Hawthorn from Cash Converters who are one of Saint's new sponsors. Martin Hawthorn spoke about how C.C. wants to work with the community via Saint's he spoke about how they are already working with Widnes RFLC & Dunfermline FC in Scotland
20.11.17 - END OF SEASON PRESENTATION
On Saturday (19.11.17) the club held its main presentation awards at the Totally Wicked stadium.
In front of a packed room & with super league guest Ryan Morgan, Domanic Preyoux and Liam Forsyth (ex Portico now Wigan Warriors) on hand to present the awards!

11/10/2017 - CAPTAINS CORNER - ST HELENS FOOD BANK
The homeless and the needy of St Helens were astounded by the generosity and community spirit that was shown in December 2016 by our fabulous club.
The parents and children of Portico Vine excelled themselves last year by donating more than 20 boxes of food & toiletries.
Danielle Lacey and myself would like to promote this year's collection starting from Tuesday 17th October 2017.
All donations can be left in the clubhouse at Scholes Lane commencing the 17th October and we will be delivering all donations on the 15th December.
02/10/2017 - TRAINING AT CARMEL COLLEGE
During this time of the year a few changes have been made regarding training , on a Tuesday until further notice training for the Cubs , U8's Gold and U10's will be held at Carmel College same timings 18.00 - 19.00 , all others teams training as normal, The teams training on a Tuesday at Carmel will continue on a Thursday evening at Portico normal timings ,
26/09/2017 - CAPTAINS CORNER ( BILLY VAUGHAN)
I had a phone call from Kurt Latimer yesterday to inform me of yet another amazing achievement.! Geof the managing director of Ravenair who is one of our major sponsors called Kurt into his office for a conversation about the progress of our wonderful club. Kurt gave Geof a progress report and an update of our vision for the future, Geoff's then praised everyone at Portico Vine from coaches to parents and highlighted his desire to be apart of our vision for the future. Kurt went to shake Geoff's hand and as he did there was a cheque for £3,000. This I may add is as much down to Geoff's total admiration for Kurt as it is for Portico Vine we are truly privileged to have this man as head coach at our club. On a personal note I'm so privileged to call him my very good friend as I totally admire his commitment !

Entering into our interim NWC Summer Break, after the last five months of fantastic junior and youth rugby league down at Scholes Lane I think our valiant Portico Panthers and Poets all deserve a well earned rest. With the School doors now firmly locked and our great kids smiles even wider than ever due to them being on their Summer Holidays away from the classroom.

Preparations for the final have been going well. We have been training consistently, as we have done all season, which I think will be important for the team’s fitness come Sunday.
This final comes as the first for me, as for many others in our team, but it’s also the last chance for me to play in a final, with it being my last year of junior rugby. I am looking at it as the most important and biggest game that I have played in.
04/07/2017 - PORTICO RECIEVE SECOND DEFIBRILLATOR
I was asked to write a paragraph about the benefits of having a defibrillator well all i can say is i hope we never must see or witness the benefits of the defib. The feeling of knowing that we have one at hand is a feeling of relief that should ANYBODY (adult or child) have a cardiac arrest, we have the means to now do something and not feel helpless. In my opinion every sports club/school and community should have access to a defibrillator unfortunately the cost is vast. we as a club have had the fortunate opportunity to purchase one. Everybody at portico ARLFC (Elliott’s field) would like to give a huge thank you to Kevin Garvey at cardiac science. Thank you from all the coaches, Team managers, parents and most of all the children...
The final preparations are being made to ensure no matter what the outcome of the match is that the lads have a great celebration as I am so proud to have been their coach and for them to have got to a final is fantastic especially after the route we took to get there.
I've played rugby for a few clubs since i was 6 but this club has stood out to me the most to play for because its more of a family, I think that's why this final means so much to all of us. This is my 3rd season with portico and I've loved every second of it, I've played in finals before and never lost in a final so I don't plan to start now. To win this final will mean the world to me and the rest of the team, I don't think theirs anything any of us want more right now
This will be the first final for some of the lads down at portico and it will be the most important final that I will play in and have played in. It will be a honor to play along side the lads against Leigh on Sunday the 9th of July. We hope to have a lot of local support behind us due to it being down the road that we are playing. The expectations of Leigh east will be high and there moral will be on a high after beating us. Although myself I thought we had a lot of character in the game! Considering the score line at half time to how we turned it around.
I'm jack I am a 17 year old from Haydock.i have been playing at portico for 1 year but this is my second season with them.I joined portico from Haydock warriors where I played for two years. In preparation for the final I have started going to the gym more and focusing on my cardiovascular fitness. I am really excited for the final as it shows me how far we have progressed and improved as a team. 14/06/2017 - PORTICO VINE SUMMER RUGBY FESTIVAL SATURDAY 17TH JUNE
Portico Vine are due to hold their annual rugby festival on the 17th June. The day will run from 09:00 until 15:00, the day will include mini games being played at different age groups, bouncy castles, different stalls including BBQ, Down Under Leisure and the Double Decker Bar. To finish the day off we have Portico Vine Under 14’s NWC Plate semi-final against Folly Lane. Everyone who has been in the past has thoroughly enjoyed themselves through having fun playing rugby and enjoying the activities going on around them
02/06/2017 - NICE DAY FOR TRAINING
Thursday we had wonderful weather the under 8's , under 10's and under 14's all trained hard in preparation for their matches at weekend , all three teams worked hard through out with plenty of water being drunk to keep hydrated, any child who is wanting to join the club , u8's , u10;s and u14;s train every Tuesday and Thursday 6pm till 7pm
28/05/2017 -CLUB HOUSE GETS A NEW PAINT JOB
After considerable refurbishment of the inside of the clubhouse, the outside was beginning to look very tired indeed.
After long deliberation by everyone about when we should do it, who should do it, how we should do it, what color it should be, then there was the cost its always comes down to the cost so eventually nothing was done.!
Then Kurt Latimer. turned up one night and said Ravenair the company I work for have donated £1,000, so that we can paint the outside of the building.
